HOUSTON – A 22-year-old pregnant woman was killed after a shooting in west Houston, according to Houston police.
HPD said a report of a shooting came in at 12:37 p.m. near Wilcrest and Richmond Ave.
“We’re not sure if it’s an altercation on what happened but there was a report that the individuals may have coming to contact prior to the shooting,” said Brian Evans with Houston Homicide Division.
Officials said the suspect followed the victim and fired a shot at the car. The bullet went through the back of the vehicle and into the victim’s back.
“I don’t think he’s aware that he struck someone inside the vehicle,” Evans said.
Police said the victim was pregnant. She and the baby died at the scene.
“Our understanding, (there) was an HPD officer here. They actually observed the vehicle that’s behind it. So they were actually here I believe. They were returning back to the station when they heard the shots being fired. They approach the vehicle to assess her she was responsive in the vehicle but as soon as a transport about her from out of the vehicle to the sidewalk there was no longer any response that she was declared deceased there.”
KPRC 2 spoke to Loretta Romo, who said was the victim’s grandmother.
“She was lovable. There are no words that you can explain to her because she’s always laughter. She loved life, she was just getting started to enjoy it. She was becoming independent,” Romo said.
Police said there were three other people in the car including the victim’s boyfriend, a small child and another person. According to police, the small child was the victim’s 1-year-old son.
Police said they’re not calling the shooting a road rage incident. They also said the victim and suspect did not know each other.
Police said they are starting the process to pull surveillance cameras from the area.
Police said the suspect fled the scene in a dark-colored 2-door coupe.
